Social Networking's power is pretty pervasive at the moment; responsible for bouts of public disorder, huge public events, flashmobs, and hordes of party gatecrashers wreaking havoc as kids publicise their house parties on Facebook and Myspace.
Such powerful forces, though, can be harnessed to great effect by those with knowledge. Witness the US presidential election. Barack Obama's campaign to take the democratic nomination is attributed to his knowledge of grass-roots campaigning, which was ultimately encapsulated in the creation of Obama's superlative campaign website, built as a social networking portal. Read more about it in this excellent essay from the London Review Of Books:
OBAMA VS CLINTON - A RETROSPECTIVE By Eliot Weinberger
Meanwhile, John McCain quietly does his thing, attacking Obama with a combination of scaremongering ads and blog coverage, which is eating away at the feel-good campaign of the democratic nominee. A good summary of how they stand right now is in the following TechCrunch article:
OBAMA VS MCCAIN - TECHCRUNCH
And John McCain gets in on the game with his new Social Networking platform:
